Description | This is a commercially produced photo album titled Omaha Illustrated and is 18.415 cm long x 12.7 cm wide and .625 cm thick with 31 pages of images. The covers are brown and the front cover has gold lettered Omaha Illustrated engraved into the bottom right corner. There are black decorative elements on the cover and a brown cord with tassels tying the book together at the spine on the left. The spine has the title Omaha, Illustrated on a piece of paper glued to the spine. The front inside endpaper has a light gold-colored leaf motif with a Minnesota State Historical Society bookplate stamped Withdrawn MnHi if red. There is a pencil notation of 110.12, the capital letter I, and $45 in the top left corner. At the right the title page says Omaha Illustrated in Albertype. A vine, leaf and flower decoration embellish the word Omaha. In the lower right corner is Copyright, 1889, by A. Witterman, 58 & 60 Reade St., New York. The Albertype Co., N.Y. The first image, Panorama of Omaha, is on a folded leaf. The panorama, possibly taken from the top of the Douglas County Courthouse, focuses east from about 17th Street between Farnam on the left, or north, and Harney on the right in front of the hill that is being graded. Starting at far left and moving to the right the New York Life Building is under construction at the northeast corner of 17th & Farnam Street, next to it is the frame of the Reddick Opera House at the northwest corner of 16th & Farnam. Across the street to the east is the Paxton Block with the conical top at the northeast corner of 16th & Farnam. The back side of the Nebraska Savings Bank and Board of Trade Building takes up the southwest corner of 16th & Farnam and occupies a large portion of the left center of the image. The church with the steeple is Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church at the northeast corner of 16th & Harney. The house standing at the southwest corner of 16th & Harney at top of the hill from the Harney Street grading and lowering is Enis Lowe's home. At the far right is a row of businesses standing on the south side of Howard Street west of 16th Street. The second image is the second Douglas County Courthouse, located on the southwest corner of 17th & Farnam and was used from October 1885 until October 1912 when the present courthouse was opened south of this structure. The third image, Union Pacific Bridge Over Missouri River, shows the bridge which was built in 1889 and torn down in 1916. The fourth page combines three images with a buffalo head in the middle. The top left image is General Offices U. P. R. R. which is the former Herndon House hotel at the northeast corner of 9th & Farnam. The center bottom image is Union Pacific Depot located between 9th & 10th and Marcy and Mason Streets. The top right image is Union Elevator and 11th St. Bridge with Union Elevator and Himebaugh and Merriam written on the side of the elevator situated alongside the railroad tracks with the 11th Street Bridge over the tracks in the background. The fifth page shows Nebraska National Bank, Farnam and 12th Street located at 1202 Farnam Street on the northwest corner of 12th & Farnam. Other buildings are seen further west on the north side of Farnam Street. The sixth page has the Paxton Hotel located on the southwest corner of 14th & Farnam. The seventh image is an artist's rendering of City Hall cornerstone laid 1890 and located at the northeast corner of 18th & Farnam. The eighth image is Barker Block, Bank of Commerce at the southwest corner of 15th & Farnam Streets. Other buildings along the west side of south 15th Street are seen. The ninth image is Barker Hotel located the northeast corner of 13th and Jones at 613-623 South 13th Street. The words Barker European Hotel and Union Ticket Office are seen. The tenth page has two images. The New Bee Building is on the left is an artist's rendering of the building at the northwest corner of 17th and Farnam. The Granite Block on the right side was located at the southeast corner of 15th and Farnam Street. The eleventh page contains the image titled Nebraska Savings Bank and Board of Trade located at 1601 Farnam on the southwest corner of 16th & Farnam. The twelth page has three images. The Ramge Block at the top left was located on the southeast corner of 15th & Harney Streets. The Post Office in the lower center was located at the southwest corner of 15th & Dodge Street. Boyd's Opera House at the top right was located at the northeast corner of 15th and Farnam. The thirteenth page is Millard Hotel located at the northeast corner of 13th and Douglas Streets. The fourteenth page is First National Bank located at the southeast corner of 13th and Farnam. The fifteenth page has two images. On the left is Omaha National Bank located at 210-212 South 13th Street. On the right is U.S. National Bank located at the southwest corner of 12th and Farnam Street. The sixteenth page is Paxton Building often referred to as the Paxton Block located at the northeast corner of 16th and Farnam. There is a huge telephone pole seen. The seventeenth page has three images. The lower left image is Murray Buildings which shows the Murray Hotel at the northwest corner of 14th & Harney. The Paxton Hotel is seen beyond at the southwest corner of 14th & Farnam. The top center image is titled Peycke Bros. Co. wholesalers building located at 1102-1106 Howard Street. The bottom right image is Kirkendall, Jones & Co. building located at 1102-1106 Harney Street at the northwest corner of 11th & Harney, wholesalers of boots and shoes. The eighteenth page is Merchants' National Bank located at the northeast corner of 13th and Farnam Street. The signs for A. (Alfred) Forman Ticket Broker-Real Estate and Henry Pundt's Grocery store are seen to the right. The nineteenth page has two images. On the left is Continental Clothing Building sometimes referred to as the Continental Block located at the northeast corner of 15th & Douglas Street. On the right is Strang Building and Bee Office. The Strang Building, wholesalers of steam and water supplies, is on the left and is located at the northeast corner of 10th & Farnam Streets at 920-924 Farnam. The building to the right is the Bee newspaper office located at 914-916 Farnam Street. The twentieth page has an image titled New Douglass Street Bridge, with Douglas misspelled. This bridge crossed the Missouri River from Omaha to Council Bluffs at Douglas Street. The twenty-first page has four images. On the far left is Christian Church which was probably the First Chirstian Church located at 1922 Capitol Avenue. The center top is First Presbyterian Church located at the northwest corner of 17th & Dodge. The center bottom is St. John's Collegiate Church located on the Creighton College campus at 2506 California Street. On the far right is St. Philomela Cathedral, with Philomena misspelled. This was located at 404 S. 9th Street on the west side at Harney. The twenty-second page is Young Men's Christian Association Hall located at the southwest corner of 16th & Douglas. The twenty-third page is High School showing the east side of Omaha High School at the northwest corner of 20th & Dodge. The twenty-fourth page is Br+C1ownell Hall school located at the southeast corner of 10th and Worthington. The twenty-fifth page is Academy of the Sacred Heart school located at 36th & Burt Streets. The twenty-sixth page has three images of residences in Omaha. The top left is Residence of S. R. Brown, Esq. home of Samuel R. Brown, capitalist, at 2401 Farnam. The bottom center is Milton Rogers and R. N. Withnell residences at 336 S. 37th Street and 332 S. 37th Street. The top right is Residence of F. P. Kirkendall, Esq. located at 604 S. 37th Street. The twenty-seventh page is Views in Hanscom Park and shows two images. The top left shows a tree-lined lake and the bottom right shows a wooden bridge surrounded by trees. The twenty-eighth page Omaha Smelting Works is an artist's rendering of a birdseye view of the smelting works buildings and train tracks north of the Douglas Street Bridge along the west side of the Missouri River. The twenty-ninth page is Stock Exchange at Union Stock Yards building with signs for Union Stockyards Bank located at the Union Stock Yards in South Omaha. The thirtieth image is titled Union Stock Yards and shows an artistic rendering birdseye view of the meat packing plants, trains, stock yards and buildings at the Union Stock Yards in South Omaha. The thirty-first and final page is Exposition Hall located on the north side of Capitol Avenue between 14th & 15th Streets. At the far left side is First Baptist Church at the southeast corner of 15th & Davenport Street. Following the last image is the back cover to the album. |
