A 4"x6" glass plate negative, full-figure portrait photograph of the Charles and Sadie Kuhl and their two sons, Frank and Otto, of Rising City, Nebraska. The man is wearing a dark, three-piece suit, white shirt and knotted tie, sitting in a chair with his ankles crossed, a watch chain attached to the button hole in his vest. The woman is seated in a wicker chair wearing a full-length, dark dress with long sleeves, ruffle trim and tucks on the bodice and a high-stand collar of contrasting, striped fabric. The two boys are wearing dark, double-breasted suits with white shirts and knotted ties. The family is posing on a fur rug in front of a painted backdrop. |

Historical Notes |
Charles Kuhl was born in 1864 in Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1882. His wife, Sadie, was born in 1870 in Germany. She immigrated to the United States in 1883. They are photographed with their two sons, Frantz and Otto. Frantz (Frank H.) was born October 16, 1889. He married Vah DePue, January 18, 1912, in Rising City, Nebraska. Frank farmed until 1930 when he became a Standard Oil Tank salesman. In those days, all loading and unloading was done by 5-gallon bucket. One time he had to walk several miles in the mud to deliver 5 gallons of kerosene. Frank died in Rising City, December 17, 1969, and is buried in Circle Mound Cemetery near Rising City. Otto was born January 6, 1893, in Rising City. He married Jennie DeLand at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Lincoln, Nebraska, November 25, 1915. They had one son. Otto farmed near Rising City until 1950, then moved to David City where he worked for Sack Lumber for several years. Otto died in Rising City, March 1967, and is buried in Circle Mound Cemetery. |
