The construction of Nye Hawthorne School is nearing completion as shown on this black and white albumen print. The location is the northwest corner of Sixteenth Street and Maxwell Avenue. Three prospective school children pose in front of the brick structure. Many window sashes are still missing and a plank ramp for wheelbarrows leads into the open doorway. Construction braces are visible through the entry arch and in the top of the bell tower. Richardsonian Romanesque architectural elements appear in the design of this structure. These include the use of an asymmetrical tower, rows of windows, some with arched tops, some with rectangular tops, as well as the arched entrance. Also typical are the hipped roof with its decorative ridge, the parapeted wall dormer, and bricks used to create ornamental wall patterns.
