The two-story brick and limestone building in this 5-3/8" x 3-3/8" photographic black-and-white postcard has a daylight basement or "ground floor", a tower over the entrance, a cupola toward the rear, and a wide chimney. Trees grace the lawn around the building.
Funds were appropriated by the Legislature for the Chemical Laboratory after student demand far outgrew the facilities of the Chemistry Department in Old Main. The second building on campus, located at the northwest corner of 12th and R Streets, it was designed by William H. Willcox and built in 1885 for about $35,000. It opened for classes in January 1886. In 1902, the Board of Regents asked for $30,000 for "special" repairs on the building. When the Chemistry Department moved to a new building in 1919, this building became Pharmacy Hall. It was torn down in 1963, and the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery was built in its place.
