The prettiest mile in Omaha Boulevard, Omaha, Neb.
Description
Color postcard (14 x 9 cm.) with a view of the prettiest mile of Omaha Boulevard in Omaha, Nebraska, later known as Florence Boulevard. The prettiest mile in Omaha's boulevard system was the section of Florence Boulevard which ran from Ames Avenue to Miller Park. A very early automobile is driving along the tree-lined boulevard.
Building of Florence Boulevard began October 10, 1892. The initial stretch of parkway was constructed north from Ames Avenue to near the Parker tract, which later became Miller Park. Following the bluff line along the Missouri River, Florence Boulevard was laid out to afford fine views of the river valley. Immediately upon its opening, the level route free of street railway tracks became popular for recreational drives by carriages, bicycle and automobile. Lined by tall sycamores and attractive homes, the length near Miller Park became known as The Prettiest Mile. Source: City of Omaha Planning Department. Omaha's Historic Park and Boulevard System.
