Bertha is wearing a long-sleeve dress with stiff, high-stand collar and bodice with small tucks sewn to the bust line with a row of covered buttons to one side of the bodice tucks. Beatrice is standing between her parents wearing a white long-sleeve dress with the skirt gathered onto the bodice yoke, a wide fabric ruffle over the shoulders and around the sleeve cuff with narrow fabric ruffle at the round neck and a wide white, satin ribbon tied into a bow on her left shoulder. Edwin and John are dressed in identical plaid, three-piece suits with black velvet jacket collars, white shirts with stiff collars and knotted ties.

Historical Notes
Edwin Wilbur Hale was born March 27, 1865, in Summit, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1889 with a Law Degree. In 1890, he traveled with a friend, Dr. William Hewit, to Nebraska. He was a member of the Nebraska National Guard Co. E. In December, 1893, he married his childhood sweetheart, Bertha William, in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. He served as a judge in Butler County, Nebraska, from 1894-1900. In 1897, he was appointed as Judge Advocate General of Governor Holcomb's staff as Colonel. Judge Hale and his family lived in David City for many years. Children born to the marriage were: Edwin W., John K. and Beatrice D. Judge Hale was a member of the Knights of Pythias, United Workmen Fraternity of America, Woodmen of the World and I.O.O.F. fraternities. He died January 19, 1903.
