May Building and adjacent businesses, Fremont, Nebraska
Description
Three business establishments are seen on this black and white, actual photograph postcard. Two false fronted shops date from Fremont's earlier days while the sleek, brick structure to the far left is newly constructed. The brick building known as the "May Building" houses Phelps Cigar Store and Fremont Trust and Savings Bank. Upstairs rooms are used for office space. The center frame building is home to John S. Jackman's Photography Studio with its wooden sign spelling out "photographs". A scalloped canvas awning shields samples of Jackman's work from southern sunlight. His display in the front windows include portraits and post cards. A second door appears to lead to Miss Wenke's Dress Making establishment. The one story false front to the far right houses Peterson's Hardware where wooden signs advertise "Hardware and Sporting Goods" as well as "Bicycles and Supplies". Tin lanterns and bread boxes are visible through the window glass. A sign on the door indicates Peterson operates a "Phonograph Store" at 93 W. Sixth Street. The utility pole has been wrapped with metal as protection from horses and appears to be a favorite place to tack handbills. A bicycle is parked on the sidewalk and unfortunately only a small portion of the horse drawn buggy is visible just below the sign for "Dr. Metzinger's Eye, Ears, Nose and Throat".
