Henry Fonda and Dorothy McGuire in "The Country Girl"
Description
This black and white photograph shows Henry Fonda, Dorothy McGuire, and an unidentified actor in a 1955 production of Clifford Odets’ play "The Country Girl" that was staged at the Civic Auditorium Music Hall as a benefit to raise funds for the Omaha Community Playhouse. Fonda is seated on the right, McGuire is seated in the middle, and the unidentified actor is standing to the left. The table, chairs, and wall are indicative of a set representing a small kitchen or dining room.
Henry Fonda and Dorothy McGuire both made their acting debuts with the Omaha Community Playhouse. Fonda debuted in the play “You and I” in 1925, and McGuire debuted a few years later in a pair of children’s plays, “The Little Princess” and “The Bluebird.” Fonda and McGuire returned to Omaha in 1955 to appear in a run of the Clifford Odets play “The Country Girl” as a benefit to raise funds for a new Omaha Community Playhouse building. The new building, completed in 1959, cost $600,000, of which $25,000 was derived from the revenue generated by the Fonda-McGuire run of “The Country Girl.” Although she is not in this photograph, a young Jane Fonda also appeared in the play.
