15th Street, looking south to Capitol from F. & M. Building, Lincoln, Neb.
Description
Color postcard (14 x 9 cm) with a view entitled "15th Street, Looking South to Capitol From F. & M. Building, Lincoln, Neb." in red at the top of the image. The F & M. Building is a large red brick building with arched doorway and arched windows and is on the east side of 15th Street. 15th Street is tree-lined all the way down to the Nebraska State Capitol, located south of 15th & K Streets. At the right side of the card is a white border.
Shown south of 15th and K Street is Nebraska's second state capitol building which was built between 1883 and 1889 and stood until 1924. Its east and west wings were separately added to the first capitol in 1883 and occupied before the first capitol was razed. Construction of the central portion of the second capitol was completed in 1889. Within twenty years, settling foundations and crumbling limestone walls and limited space required that the second capitol be replaced. In January 1919 the legislature passed a bill to erect a new building. Construction of the wing sections began in 1922, and in December 1924, offices moved into them and the second capitol was razed.
